A Custom Railing Project Inspired by the Forest
When we think of steel structures, it’s easy to picture straight lines and rigid angles. But at EA Craftworks, we believe metal can be so much more. With the right techniques and creative vision, steel can take on organic, flowing shapes that evoke the natural world—proving that even the strongest materials can feel soft and alive.
Recently, we had the opportunity to bring this concept to life by fabricating a one-of-a-kind decorative railing for a rural Michigan residence. The inspiration? The graceful, intertwining branches of the surrounding forest.
Forging Steel Into Organic Form
To achieve this nature-inspired design, our team used a combination of forging methods and both hot and cold forming techniques. Each “branch” was carefully shaped to mimic the twists, curves, and subtle variations you would find in real trees. The process required meticulous craftsmanship, as every piece needed to fit seamlessly together while maintaining the natural, freeform aesthetic.
Despite its sculptural beauty, the railing still had to perform its essential function: safety. We’re proud to say that we successfully balanced artistry with practicality, designing a fully code-compliant railing that met all Michigan building regulations without compromising the intricate design.
A Finish That Completes the Vision
Once the branches were fully formed and assembled, we applied an atmospheric black patina to enhance the design’s depth and texture. This finish not only brings out the detail in the forged steel but also complements the warm tones of the home’s interior, making the piece feel like a true extension of its natural surroundings.

The finished railing now serves as a striking focal point in the residence, bringing the beauty of Michigan’s forests indoors. More than a functional architectural feature, it’s a piece of art that tells a story—about place, craft, and the enduring connection between nature and design.
