Metalwork in Interior Design Trends
In a departure from shifting trends and striving for the striking and unexplored, across the design spectrum, we’re seeing a movement towards that which is personal, lasting, and natural. Spaces that people wish to see themselves reflected in and return to – to live in, not simply inhabit. Spaces where beauty, comfort, and practicality are forged into an experience of each moment being celebrated.

There is a call to put down roots, to form bonds, to feel connected, to leave lasting memories. Designing for these desires organically pays homage to tried-and-true historical elements – because, of course, they just work – such as classic brasswork, or infinitely-varied patinated metal evocative of aged artwork, or clean yet tactile cast iron elements. Looking at beloved architectural masterpieces, these are some of their defining features.
Yet, we are not limited to scouring the world for antiques to make such designs possible. Change, too, is inevitable, and modern interior design may draw on the past for inspiration and cohesion, but the ways in which technology has reshaped our spaces presents exhilarating challenges when creating with a feel for nature, comfort, and quiet luxury of a life enjoyed.
Technology is oftentimes fully integrated into our lives – and often for the better! But it can be a stark contrast to an area grounded in natural materials. We are seeing a trend towards interior design decisions that disguise screens when not in use, and towards fixtures, charging stations, and power elements that complement a style rather than require adjustments to it.
If an element of technology can withstand being replaced without compromising the feel of a loved and lived-in space, better yet, since the pace of change in that aspect of our lives seems to be unrelenting. So whether this involves hiding our tech within other design features we actually use daily, or offering choices of quality materials for that tech, we are looking toward a smoother integration going forward.
